The Gentilly Woods neighborhood in New Orleans is a subdistrict of Gentilly and sits just below the Pontchartrain Park subdivision. This affordable area of single family homes was mostly built in the 1950s and it’s close to Southern University and the University of New Orleans.
More suburban in feel, Gentilly Woods is basically a residential neighborhood, with some retail and fast food options on the Chef Menteur Highway boundary. The Pontilly Neighborhood Association (which doesn’t have a website) works closely with the Pontchartrain Park Neighborhood Association on quality of life issues.
The predominant architectural styles are ranches and raised cottages. The typical home has 3 or 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. Fenced yards and off street parking are the norm, although some of the new construction doesn’t have landscaping or fencing.
There’s a small neighborhood park, but nearby you’ll also find the larger Pontchartrain Park and a golf course. Most of your errands will require a car or the use of public transportation.
