Leonidas New Orleans

Part of the larger Carrollton area, the Leonidas New Orleans neighborhood stretches from the river to S. Claiborne Avenue. It includes some thriving hot spots and 2 large neighborhood parks, along with very traditional New Orleans homes.

Shotguns and raised cottages are the predominant architecture here, where you’ll find high ceilings and some great original details in many of the homes. New construction has started to fill in some of the vacant lots in the neighborhood, though, so don’t think you’ll only find older homes here.

Narrow lots are the norm and you’ve got about a 50/50 shot at finding a place with off-street parking. But once you’re parked, there’s plenty to do within a short distance of just about every home in the neighborhood. Don’t want to walk? Hop on the streetcar that runs right down Carrollton Avenue.

What’s there to do in Leonidas?

Near the river, you’ll find Cowbell, Brigtsen’s and The Camellia Grill – three excellent examples of local cuisine.

Head on up Carrollton to Oak Street, one of the most happening places in Leonidas. Oak Street is lined with coffee shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, a bookstore, and other retail, and is also home to the annual Po-Boy Festival.

Palmer Park (now known as Marsalis Harmony Park) anchors the corner of Carrollton and Claiborne, along with a large Walgreens and the Robert Fresh Market, while Harrell Park sits closer to the parish line. Palmer Park is the location of a monthly art market, with food, arts + crafts, and events featuring local artisans and craftsmen.

In between Oak Street and the park, there is a multitude of shops and restaurants to choose from, mostly right on the streetcar line.

The Ye Olde College Inn and Rock ‘N’ Bowl (celebrity sightings, anyone?) sit just outside of the boundaries. When we say just outside, they literally are on the next block up from the northern edge of the neighborhood.
