Freret New Orleans Neighborhood
Part of the larger Carrollton area in Uptown, the Freret New Orleans neighborhood is bounded by S. Claiborne, Napoleon, LaSalle, and Jefferson.
Named for William Freret, a 19th-century mayor of New Orleans, the area butts up to the Broadmoor, Milan, Uptown, and Audubon neighborhoods and is home to Ochsner Baptist Hospital. This makes the Freret area appealing to medical personnel since it puts them close to work.
The hot spot in Freret is the entertainment district, an 8 block collection of shopping, restaurants, and bars that are also near both Tulane and Loyola Universities. There is a large selection of places to grab a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or even burgers and hot dogs, New Orleans style.
Check out the monthly Freret Market, on the corner of Freret and Napoleon. There’s a great selection of food, arts and crafts, and live music. It’s definitely worth attending, particularly during the holidays.
Freret’s predominant architecture is raised cottages, with some camelbacks, and arts & crafts styles tossed into the mix. Over the last few years, we’ve seen some contemporary new builds pop up on vacant lots, but it’s definitely not the norm. There are a few condos in the area that closely resemble homes, but most of the real estate is single-family homes.
