Mostly residential, the Milneburg New Orleans neighborhood in Gentilly has a fascinating history that includes the fact that it was once a port and resort area. Originally a town, it was in the current location of the University of New Orleans but was absorbed into the city in the early 1900s. Trivia tidbit: the center of the town was the setting for Pontchartrain Beach, a long-gone theme park on the edge of Lake Pontchartrain.
When driving around the neighborhood, look for the land-locked lighthouse that used to be at the end of a pier!
Today, Milneburg sits inland from Lake Pontchartrain, in an awesome location that’s convenient to UNO, SUNO, the lakefront, Pontchartrain Park, and Joe Bartholomew Golf Course.
Still affordable by most standards, the neighborhood is filled with raised cottages and ranch homes. Off-street parking and fenced yards make it feel a little more suburban, but downtown is only 15 minutes away.
In the past, the average home had 3 beds, 2 baths, 1590 square feet of living space and was built in the 1960s or 1970s. In recent years, new construction has sprung up all over the place in Milneburg, particularly on the higher end of the community price range. The new construction is typically 3 beds, 2 baths, with 1800-2000 square feet of living area.
