New Orleans Winter Home Maintenance
I know, we don’t have that much of a winter here in New Orleans. But on those days when it’s in the 30s, overcast, and windy, you’ll be thankful that you took some time to do these easy home fixes before winter set in.
Clean your gutters
We may rarely get snow, but the oak leaves can quickly clog up your gutters, making the water back up and cause damage to your home. Clogged gutters can create a lot of problems and you should clear them before they can create any damage.
Clean your chimney
This is not a do-it-yourself project but should be performed by a professional chimney sweep. If you don’t use your fireplace, consider sealing the flue to keep critters from exploring and finding themselves smack in the middle of your living room.
Change your smoke alarm batteries
Because we know you didn’t do it when you set your clocks back.
Have the furnace cleaned and serviced
A clean unit functions much more efficiently, saving you money every month on your utility bill. Not to mention, faulty furnaces can leak deadly carbon dioxide into your home.
Check your windows and doors
Homes can lose a lot of heat and air through cracks around windows and doors. Caulk where needed, change that old weather stripping and keep the warm air in and cold air out.
Inspect underneath raised homes
Did you know that mice can fit through a hole the size of a nickel? EEEK! What about underground water leaks? Fill any holes you find with steel wool held in place with caulking. Or better yet, call a professional.
