Right next door to Central City, the Milan New Orleans neighborhood is filled with Victorian cottages, shotguns, camelbacks and a few larger properties that have been converted into condos. Over the last couple of years, prices have been on the rise as investors have grabbed neglected properties and rehabbed them into pristine condition. The closer to St. Charles Avenue you’re located, the higher the price is likely to be.
The first thing to know is how the neighborhood name is pronounced. Get it right, it’s MY-lin. Just another little quirk of the city that loves an alternative pronunciation of a word everyone thinks they know.
Expecting company soon? There are a couple of bed + breakfasts in the neighborhood if you don’t want to share your space. But what’s the fun in living in New Orleans if you don’t entertain, right?
Narrow lots are the norm here, so you have a 50/50 chance of finding a home with off-street parking. Since most of the businesses are located on either the top or bottom of the neighborhood, street parking is found a little easier than in some other places.
The streetcar runs along St. Charles Avenue, one of the boundaries of the Milan neighborhood, and can quickly transport you to any number of restaurants, bars, or shopping options.
Small green spaces can be found at Samuel Square and the Saratoga Playspot, both located centrally in the neighborhood. Three different schools are also located here, so be aware of drop off and pick up times when coming and out of the lower portion of the neighborhood. Detours to Napoleon and Louisiana Avenues are quick and easy to avoid that traffic.
During Mardi Gras, you’ll need to stay above St Charles Avenue to avoid parade parking and traffic, but it’s a small trade-off when you get to live close to the route.
