Walkable New Orleans Neighborhoods
When it comes time to choose a new home, buyers are on the hunt for the most walkable New Orleans neighborhoods. Or that’s what the survey says, anyway.
According to the National Association of REALTORS® 2013 Community Preference Survey, 60 percent of respondents favor a neighborhood with a mix of houses, stores, and other businesses that are within walking distance, rather than neighborhoods requiring driving between home, work, and recreation. Respondents indicated that while the size of a home or yard does matter, most are willing to compromise size for a preferred neighborhood and less commuting.
Makes total sense, right? Not being reliant on a car or mass transit. Spending your dollars close to home, in a store likely owned by a neighbor. The appeal of your ability to walk to dinner or cocktails or to grab a loaf of bread can’t be underestimated. That’s how this city was originally built, as evidenced by all of the houses that were clearly corner stores at some point in history.
It’s a good thing that so many of our New Orleans neighborhoods provide exactly what people say they are looking for. A move back to more urban living is sweeping the country and New Orleans has some fabulous choices in homes that fit the bill. The Lower Garden District, Central Business District, Warehouse District, and most of Uptown are all appealing to folks that want to live near amenities that don’t require them to get into the car or call a drive share service.
